About Us
Pediatric rheumatologists diagnose and treat inflammatory (rheumatic) conditions. These diseases may affect joints, muscles, bones and tissues anywhere in your child’s body. They can cause painful or unusual symptoms, such as rashes, swollen joints, unexplained fevers, limping or weakness.
Many rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, are autoimmune disorders. They happen when the immune system doesn’t work as it should. In a healthy child, the body’s immune system fights off infections. If your child has an autoimmune disease, the body’s immune system mistakenly fights some of its own healthy cells and tissues.
There are many different types of rheumatic and autoimmune diseases, with differing symptoms and causes. At Children’s Nebraska, our pediatric rheumatologists evaluate symptoms and treat all types of rheumatic and autoimmune diseases.
Children’s has the only rheumatology department in the state dedicated exclusively to pediatrics. Our pediatric rheumatologists understand the special medical needs and concerns of children and families with ongoing (chronic) autoimmune or inflammatory disorders.
