Behavioral Health Technicians Like Adriana Let Children Know They’re Not Alone
Healthcare careers at Children’s Nebraska offer special opportunities to improve the lives of children and families. As a Behavioral Health Technician at Children’s, Adriana provides comfort for every child she cares for. When young patients need a helping hand, she’s there to listen with unrushed attention.
Adriana is part of a collaborative, multispecialty team, providing holistic, customized care for each patient.
“A behavioral health tech is someone who stays with you,” says Adriana, who has several years’ experience in this position at Children’s. “You can vent to me, you can tell me whatever is bothering you or whatever you have on your mind.”
When children just need to talk, Adriana listens. If they struggle to communicate, she guides them.
Adriana engages children through active listening and techniques such as journaling and drawing. With patience and expertise, she helps children feel more at ease and comfortable expressing themselves.
Helping Children Find Their Way In Their Journey
Adriana meets children where they are in their mental health journey. If they’re hesitant, she reminds them the compassionate experts at Children’s are here to help them get better.
“Whatever thoughts they’re having, they can talk if they need to talk,” said Adriana. “If they don’t feel comfortable talking, they can express their thoughts in a journal.”
Some children, families and communities may feel uncomfortable expressing or understanding their emotional issues. Adriana’s Hispanic heritage helps her understand the varying approaches and views of different cultures.
“Mental health is important for me because in the Hispanic community we don’t really talk about it,” said Adriana. “We say ‘Oh that doesn't exist,’ but it does. It’s okay to talk about what you're going through. You don’t have to suppress any emotions or any feelings. It’s okay not to be okay!”
Adriana uses patience so children can open up to her when they're ready. She doesn't overwhelm them with questions or information.
“I let them set the pace,” said Adriana. “I hope to reach those kids who need help and want to better themselves. I want them to trust me.”
The most rewarding part of her work is seeing patients improving and knowing she is making a difference in their lives.
