Palliative Care

Facing your child’s serious illness is about more than symptoms and treatments; it’s about coping with uncertainty of what’s likely the toughest experience you’ve ever had. You are not alone in this journey.

About Us

The Hand in Hand Palliative Care team at Children’s Nebraska is here to make sure your child is comfortable. Our goal is to foster an environment where children can immerse themselves in cherished activities with their loved ones, play with their favorite toys and create precious memories. Your child’s quality of life and your peace of mind are our top priorities. We support families by:

  • Helping your child be as active as possible

  • Allowing you to spend more time being parents rather than care coordinators

  • Preparing you for potential crises

  • Helping you with making medical decisions

When your child starts receiving palliative care, we’ll talk with you and your child honestly and compassionately to help you understand their condition, treatment and what to expect moving forward. Your family’s values, hopes and wishes are important to us. We will explore care options with your family, including supporting you through advanced care planning, such as long-term care.

Your child will receive palliative care in addition to any treatments they’re already undergoing for their condition. We recognize the important role of your child’s specialists and integrate our services seamlessly with other departments by staying in touch with your child’s care providers and offering integrative therapies, such as pet therapy and relaxation techniques, to relieve symptoms and find peace of mind.

Treatments and Services

The Hand in Hand Palliative Care team is a multidisciplinary team that provides both medical and non-medical methods to care for a child. While medication might be the best approach in some cases, integrative therapies such as massage therapy, healing touch or music therapy may be preferred in others. Often, using medication and integrative therapies together is the preferred treatment approach.

Children’s offers a variety of inpatient services and support options to help with decision making and coping with emotional challenges.

Integrative Support Therapies

Our team also provides different integrative support therapies to help relieve symptoms caused by the child’s illness or treatment. These therapies can improve the child’s life quality and help them express their thoughts and emotions.
