About Us
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Children’s Nebraska is available 24/7, staffed by pediatric intensivists, nurses and other providers specifically trained in the care of critically ill children. We also have access to pediatric medical and surgical specialists throughout the hospital, who are called in as needed for comprehensive care.
Our award-winning PICU is home to Nebraska's only pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program, offering life-saving support during recovery after heart surgery or for children awaiting heart or lung transplants, along with a range of other advanced treatments and technologies.
To ensure the highest standards of care, we follow well-defined protocols aimed at preventing infections and reducing hospital-acquired conditions like central line infections and pressure sores. Our strict hand hygiene practices and leading-edge procedures prioritize patient safety and recovery.
We place a strong emphasis on family-centered care, conducting family-centered rounds and providing families with tablets to stay connected with their child’s nurse and access test results 24/7. We also offer emotional support and have pediatric experts available to guide families through their child’s hospital experience.
