Neonatology (NICU)

Our Neonatology and NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) team provides expert, compassionate care for your patient’s newborn facing complex medical challenges. Whether due to premature birth, congenital conditions or other critical health concerns, our specialized team of neonatologists, pediatric nurses and other healthcare professionals work around the clock to ensure the best possible outcomes for each baby and their family.

About Us

When a newborn faces serious health challenges, it can be overwhelming for parents. At Children’s Nebraska, our Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides advanced, high-level care for infants with critical health concerns, such as heart defects, breathing disorders and other complex medical issues. Our team of pediatric experts, including neonatologists, advanced practice nurses and other healthcare professionals, specializes in caring for newborns requiring intensive medical support.

We understand the importance of supporting not just the newborn, but also their parents, families and loved ones. That’s why we offer open visiting hours, allowing one parent to stay with their baby around the clock. Our secure, web-based technology also enables families to monitor their baby’s progress remotely, ensuring they stay connected even when not at the bedside.

As infants transition out of the NICU, our care team provides guidance to ensure a smooth process. Our developmental care experts support families in helping the smallest, most fragile babies stay on track to meet neurologic and physical milestones, while our lactation consultants assist breastfeeding mothers throughout their journey.

Treatments and Services

NICU care teams use special warmers, incubators (enclosed, protective beds), therapies and monitors. Providers will track the baby’s vital signs, such as breathing, heart rate and body temperature, providing continual communication. This allows our pediatric providers to recommend specialized tests and treatments based on the child’s condition including these and other options.
