The accredited Child Life Internship at Children’s Nebraska prepares students for Child Life certification and careers in pediatric care. Through this program, students gain hands-on experience in a pediatric setting, helping them develop essential clinical skills.
What Does It Mean to Work in Child Life?
Working in Child Life means helping kids and their families feel more comfortable during some of their toughest medical experiences. Child Life specialists provide emotional support, explain what’s happening in a way kids can understand and use play to help them cope with treatments and hospital stays. They make the hospital feel less scary and help kids deal with all sorts of emotions.
Internship Details
The internship includes an orientation with essential teaching modules and observation of clinical routines. Here are some more key details:
Offered twice a year during the fall and spring semesters
Runs for 16 weeks, 40 hours per week
Gain up to 640 hours of hands-on experience
No summer internships available
Supervised and supported by a certified Child Life specialist and an internship coordinator
Participate in Clinical Rotations
These rotations allow you to apply what you’ve learned in a real-world environment, so you can gain confidence in your role. Possible rotations may include:
General Medical/Surgical Inpatient Units
Hematology/Oncology & Infusion Center
Radiology
Emergency Department
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
Cardiac Care Unit (CCU)
Pre/Post Surgical Unit
