Understanding the Differences
Fellowships
Fellowships are for doctors who have completed their residency and want to specialize in a specific area of medicine, such as Pediatric Cardiology or surgery. The length of a fellowship may vary, but it's an opportunity to explore a particular field of work. During fellowships, doctors work closely with mentors and can participate in research projects.
Residencies
Residency programs happen after graduating from medical school. They last about 3 to 7 years, depending on the specialty. During this time, residents work in hospitals and clinics, caring for patients while learning from experienced doctors. Residency is great because it's all about building the important skills residents need to further hone their skills.
