Preparing for Your Child's Sleep Study

If your child attends one of our sleep clinics and a sleep specialist determines additional evaluation is needed to accurately diagnose and treat your child’s sleep disorder, they will refer your child to our sleep lab for an overnight sleep study.

During the sleep study, your child will spend the night in our lab. Sensors placed on your child’s scalp and face will allow our specialists to monitor:

  • Heart rate and respiratory rate

  • Breathing patterns

  • Leg movements

  • Blood-oxygen levels during sleep

  • General behavior during sleep periods (captured on video camera)

  • Sleep position

  • Hours slept

  • Snoring (captured on a snore microphone)

  • Brain activity and stages of sleep

  • Exhaled carbon dioxide levels

Preparing for your Child's Sleep Study

  • Ensure your child has showered and has clean hair.

  • Pajamas with both a top and bottom are preferred.

  • You’re welcome to bring a pillow, blanket or any comfort items from home.

  • The setup for the sleep study takes about 45 minutes and we aim to start as close to bedtime as possible.

  • Sleep studies are generally painless unless a blood draw is required.
