About
My name is Joe Straley and I’m a general pediatrician at the Eagle Run office for Children’s Physicians.
When I went to college, I was trying to decide between pediatrics and education. I was actually an English major. I was a teacher in the Westside Junior High School system for 2 years before becoming a general pediatrician.
Being a teacher by training, I focused on spending a lot more time doing well checks — even for acute injuries and illnesses. I would go over why we’re doing what we’re doing, when we’re doing it, and how we’re doing it.
I wouldn’t just see the patients rapidly and move on. I prefer to spend a lot of time on the educational part of it. I would hope my patients would describe me as someone who’s on time — because I respect their time, too, and I try to value their experiences.
We usually see a combination of well visits — anywhere from newborns up through the college years — and a lot of acute illnesses, from influenza to common injuries. We also see a few chronic problems — like attention deficit disorder, asthma, and some behavioral problems.
We’re really lucky to have great families and great parents. That makes our job so much easier.
