What made you want to be a physician?
I wanted to be a physician from a young age. As I went through college, I knew helping kids was the direction I needed to take. I am always the adult sitting at the kids’ table during family events and have always been able to bond and connect with kids (likely because I am a true kid at heart). I want to be the person these families can rely on during times of good health and when they are not feeling well.
What is your approach to treating patients?
My approach to treating patients is focused on including patients and their families in shared decision-making as much as possible. This includes an ample amount of education and discussion about different treatment options and coming to plans that are best for the patient and their family. I also emphasize using evidence-based medicine and staying up to date with evolving pediatric literature and research.
How do you build trust with patients and families?
Communication is one of the best ways to build trust with both patients and families. Trust also comes down to doing what is best for my patients and doing everything I can to ensure they are getting the best care possible, which I take great pride in accomplishing. I enjoy pediatrics because I get the opportunity to communicate medical information to a wide range of individuals at a level they understand and feel comfortable with. I relate and build rapport with both patients and their families. I can also feel confident that all patients coming to see me know that I am a person who truly cares about them and their well-being.
What would you like your patients and their families to know about you?
I am from Omaha and am a lifelong Nebraskan. I love all things sports, especially everything Huskers! I have a lovely wife and a young son. My favorite things to do outside of work are spending time with my family, being outside as much as possible especially going to the park now that I have a son, making BBQ, golfing and the occasional home improvement project.
If they are a parent, how has being a parent shaped them as a pediatrician?
I have a son who is still under 1 year old and he has been the biggest blessing for my wife and me. Having a son has helped my ability to give more practical advice to families that you don’t get in traditional medical education. It has also helped shape how I communicate with families and emphasize patient/caregiver concerns, especially in times of stress or illness.
Do you have clinical or special areas of interest?
I am interested in taking care of all pediatric patients of any age, gender, race, orientation, or background.
