The COVID-19 vaccine is free, available and protects those age 12 and older in the United States.
Vaccination is our best tool to stop the spread of the virus and get back to the version of life we all miss. As a busy parent, you may have been curious about the vaccine but never found the time to dig deeper to get the details–how much it costs, where to find the vaccine and how much of a hassle it will be get you and your teen vaccinated. Here’s what you need to know in three magic words: free, available and protected.
FREE:
The COVID-19 vaccine is free of charge to all people living in the United States, regardless of their immigration or health insurance status. Providers should not charge you for the vaccination. Providers may ask for insurance, but you will not pay for the vaccine.
AVAILABLE:
The COVID-19 vaccine is widely available. You can find the nearest COVID-19 vaccine site by going to www.vaccines.gov and searching by your ZIP code. You can also text your ZIP code to 438829. You can also call 1-800-232-0233 to find locations near you in the U.S. Most local pharmacy partners in Nebraska and the region offer the vaccine, including Costco, CVS Pharmacy, HyVee, Walgreens and Walmart. If you are in the Omaha community, feel free to call Children’s at (402) 955-SHOT to schedule a free vaccination for your teen.
Before you arrive to get the vaccine, check to see if you need an appointment, or if they accept walk-ins. You may need to bring identification to your appointment and you will most definitely need to wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth. After your vaccine, you will need to stay in the vaccination area for 15 minutes in case you experience an immediate reaction.
PROTECTED:
Both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines are approved for teens 12 and older and require two shots given at two different times. So be sure to ask about scheduling a second appointment when you and your teen are there getting the first shot.
