Children’s team specializing in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO—or heart-lung bypass support) has received the Gold Center of Excellence Award from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). ELSO is an international non-profit consortium of health care institutions dedicated to the development and evaluation of novel therapies for support of failing organ systems.
The award recognizes extracorporeal life support programs worldwide that distinguish themselves by having processes, procedures and systems in place that promote excellence and exceptional patient care. To the health care community, it demonstrates an assurance of high-quality standards, specialized equipment and supplies, defined patient protocols, and advanced education of all staff members.

Children’s NICU is one of the only seven NICUs nationwide to be honored with the Gold Beacon Award for Excellence, an award given by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN). The Gold Beacon Award—the highest designation possible—recognizes excellent and sustained unit performance and patient outcomes. Children’s PICU shares this prestigious recognition, as one of only 10 PICUs in the country to receive the Gold Beacon Award.
